INTRODUCTION
We can't deny the existence of anything which we have not seen. Allah (God) has created creation over creation for example, we know there is world of oceans and everything in it is not visible, varieties of sea creature still unknown to us. We are unable to see air, energy, atoms, bacteria, gravitational force, traveling of light etc. Similarly we have creation of Allah known as Jinn.. We got this clue from Quran and authentic sayings of prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The World Of Jinn
The word Jinn in Arabic comes from root word ( ن ن ج) something that is hidden and conceal from the eyes. We cannot see them. They are in world that is beyond our physical world that we inhabit. Both exist in this world, they are able to see us but we cannot. Allah and his prophet( SAW ) tell us that Jinns were created before men.The Angels have been created from light and Jinn from Fire. There are several verses in quran that talk about fact that Jinns are created from Fire.
“He created man from clay like (that of ) pottery. And he created Jinn from smokeless flame fire.”(chapter55:verse 14,15)
The Jinn have free will like that of human and they live in earth in different world parallel to human beings. There are believers and disbeliever among them. In Islamic literature disbelieving Jinn is given the name of Shaytaan [ Satan, Devil ]
( Fath al Bari By Ahmad Ibn Ali Ibn Hajar, Cairo, Egypt, Al – Matba'ah As – Salafeeyah, 1st ed. 1961 ), Vol. 6 p- 344 and Vol 8 p – 675 )
Our beloved prophet Muhammad(saw) said. “Jinns are of three types.”
They have wings and they fly and roam around in the air. Second form of Jinn is that they typically appear in the form of animals like snakes and dogs. They may appear in other form as well. The third type of Jinn is, they come and go.
( Fath al Bari By Ahmad Ibn Ali Ibn Hajar, Cairo, Egypt, Al – Matba'ah As – Salafeeyah, 1st ed. 1961 ), Vol. 6 p- 344 and Vol 8 p – 675 )
Creation
Allah mention that jinns are created from fire.
“The Jinn are created from fire of a scorching wind”….Al Quran 15:27
In statement of Prophet narrated by Aishah ( RA ) “ The Angels were created from light and the Jinn from a Fiery wind “
( Saheeh Muslim [ English trans ) Vol . 4 p – 1540 hadith no. 7134 ]
Allah created the jinn before humans, they shed bloods then the army of Angels were send by Allah who expelled them to remote island.
“And when we told the Angels to prostrate to Adam, they all prostrated except Iblees. He was of the jinn…..” Al Quran 18:50
The last messenger Prophet Muhammed ( saw ) was sent to both mankind and Jinn and it is been confirmed through Quran and sunnah and agreed upon by all companions and scholars of all Madhabs. But there are many who denied existence of jinn and they also denied, Angels, day of resurrection, books and prophets.
Possession into Human Body
“ Those who devour interest will arise like one driven mad by Satan's touch.... ( Al Quran 2:275 )
Abdullah ( Son of Ahmad Ibn Hambal ) narrates :
“ When i told my father that someone claimed that Jinn cannot posses human body, he replied, my son, he is a liar. It is one them ( devils ) who is saying with his tongue.
( Muhmmad Ibn ' Addillah Ash – Shibli, Ahkam Al – Jann. ( Beirut : Dev Ibn Zaydoon, 1st ed. 1985 ), pp. 143 – 144
There is famous hadith repoted by Umm Bint Al Wazi, where he describe that Prophet ( SAW ) cured the insane boy by hitting him on his back and saying 'Get Out, enemy of Allah ! At the some time. He also made a prayer for him and the boy was better after that.
Collected by Ahmad Abu Dawud Al Tayalasi from Matar Ibn ' Abd Al Rahman ( Usud – Al – Ghabah, Vol 2 p- 145 )
In another narration, Khariah Ibn Al Salt reported from his uncle, who said that when a madman bound in spell. He recited Surah Al Fatihah on him morning and evening for three days. He gather his saliva and Spit . And the person stood up as he broke free from being tied in bonds.
( Sunan Abi Dawood ( Engtrans ) Vol . 3 p- 1092 hadith no. 3887
Control over jinn
Quran confirmed that Prophet Sulayman ( AS ) was given the control over the Jinn, which was his unique miracle.
“ My Lord forgive me and grant me sovereignty not allowed to anyone after me.....…(Al Quran 38:35)
“ And there were gathered before Sulayman ( As ) ( Solomon (pbuh) his hosts of jinns and men, and birds and they all were set in battle order ( Marching ahead )..........( Al Quran 27:17)
This was special favor was given only to him. No other person can have control over Jinns. People indulge in sacrilegious activities, Claiming control over Jinn is only a myth. They enter into contract with Jinn, leading people to misguidance. These Jinn want people to commit 'Shirk' ( Associating partner with Allah ).Sometimes evil Jinn stop harming the person when the person start reciting chantation or indulge in idolatry or other practice of disbelief.
Abdullah ibn Masood wife Zainab reported that she was wearing a cord around her neck. Her eye used to twitch and when she went to a Jew he put on a spell and it stopped twitching. Abdullah snatched it and broke it up. He replied that ” it was a devil prodding it so when you had it bewitched he stopped”.He asked her to make supplication that prophet saw taught him.
(Sunan Abi Dawud,(Eng trans.) vol 3, p 1089, hadith 3874 )
Conclusion
They have certain abilities which may appear to us to be supernatural and this is where we start dig into paranormal of little bit. Any sort of activities like light flicking on and off , door opened on its own, picture falling in haunted houses etc.may be from Jinn. These may appear to be supernatural to us, but one should understand that we see the greatness of Allah and his creation every day like birds flying in sky, fish swims in water etc,,.Similarly after knowing about Jinn.We should not fear or indulge our self in practices displeasing to Allah.
