He was son of wealthy merchant ‘Abbas al Mutlalib’ ( uncle of Prophet saw ). Thus he was called Ibn Abbas ( Meaning son of Abbas ). His mother ( Umm al fadi Lubada ) was second women converted to Islam on some day when Prophets wife khadijah bint Khuwaylid accepted Islam.
EARLY LIFE
He was born in 619 CE.three years before prophet migration to Madeenah. When he reached at age of maturity his mother took him to prophet saw. He attached himself to the service of the Prophet. He used to fetch water for him for making wudu. He was the one who always prefer to stand behind the Prophet whille salah (prayers) and accompany him in his journeys and expeditions. Other name given to him Al-Hibr, ( the doctor) Al Bahr ( the Sea ).He was given the title of Hibr- Ul - Ummah. The Prophet would often draw him as a child close to him, he used to pat him on his shoulder and pray “O Lord, make him acquire a deep understanding of the religion of Islam and instruct him in the meaning and interpretation to things.”

EDUCATION
After the death of Prophet (saw) he continued to collect and learn teaching of Prophet from companions. He become one of the most learned companions of Prophet (saw). He alone memorized about 1666 sayings of Prophet (saw) [Hadith] recorded and authenticated in collection of Al Bukhari and Muslim.
TEACHER OF UMMAH
Ibn Abbas was a teacher, who made his house equivalent to that of a university where he taught. One of his companion described typical scene in front of his house.
“I saw people gathered on the roads leading to his house until there hardly any room in front of his house. I went in and told him about the crowds of people at his door and he asked me to get water for wudu’. He performed wudu and sat down. Then he Said ‘ go out and tell them, Whoever want to ask about the Quran and its interpretation they can enter. I did the same and people entered, until the house was filled then he said to me ‘Go out and say: who wants to ask about Quran and its pronunciation let him enter’. Again the house was filled and Abdullah explain and teach them what was requested.

I have seen Umar discussing difficult problems in the presence of veterans of Badr leaving among the Muhajirin and Ansar. There were many hadith that was narrated by him , one of the famous hadith narrated by him that Muhammad (saw) said, “Two favors are treated unjustly by people: health and free time. (Sahih al Bukhari, Al tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, An Nasai)
SHADOW OF THE PROPHET
Whenever he heard that someone knew a hadith of the Prophet which he did not know, he rush quickly to him to record it. He would go to as many as 30 companion to verify a single matter. He described what once he did when he come to know about Sahabi who know hadith unknown to him. He described that.”I went to him during afternoon and spread my cloak in front of his door.The wind blew dust on me ( as I sat waiting for him)
He said that “I preferred waiting, rather than seeking permission to enter his house. Seeing me in that condition the Sahabi said ‘ O cousin of the Prophet ! what happen? If you asked me to come I would have come to you.’Abdullah replied ‘I should come to you because knowledge is sought , it does not come like that, And he learned that hadith from him. This shows his sincerity and dedication towards Islamic knowledge.
HIS DEVOTION TOWARDS ISLAM
It was not only in collection of Hadith that Abdullah specialized. He devoted himself to acquiring knowledge in a wide variety of fields like Tafseer, Fiqh, Inheritance law, Arab history before Islam etc. As his knowledge grew, he become famous. Masruq Ibn Al Ajda said of him “whenever I saw Ibn Abbas, I would say : “He is the most handsome of men. When he spoke i would say. He is the most eloquent of men. And when held a conversation I would say, He is most knowledgeable of men”. So when one strive for true knowledge, Allah elevate his status among masses.

LEARNED MAN OF UMMAH
The khalifa umar ibn-al-khattab often sought his advice on important matters of state and branded him as “the young man of maturity”. He was not content to accumulate knowledge. He felt he had a duty to the ummah to educate those who are in search of knowledge.He turned to teaching and his house was a complete university. It was university in full sense with specialize teaching but with one difference that ‘there was only one teacher who was ‘Abdullah Ibn Abbas.’
Conclusion
He had genuine and abiding concern for people. He said ” after realizing the importance of a verse of God’s Book, “I would wish that all people should know what I know.” His service for ummah was incredible. May Alllah accept our deen and choose us among his best people, to convey his message to masses. Ameen ya Rabb !

Whenever he heard that someone knew a hadith of the Prophet which he did not know, he rush quickly to him to record it. He would go to as many as 30 companion to verify a single matter. He described what once he did when he come to know about Sahabi who know hadith unknown to him. He described that.”I went to him during afternoon and spread my cloak in front of his door.The wind blew dust on me ( as I sat waiting for him)
He said that “I preferred waiting, rather than seeking permission to enter his house. Seeing me in that condition the Sahabi said ‘ O cousin of the Prophet ! what happen? If you asked me to come I would have come to you.’Abdullah replied ‘I should come to you because knowledge is sought , it does not come like that, And he learned that hadith from him. This shows his sincerity and dedication towards Islamic knowledge.
HIS DEVOTION TOWARDS ISLAM
It was not only in collection of Hadith that Abdullah specialized. He devoted himself to acquiring knowledge in a wide variety of fields like Tafseer, Fiqh, Inheritance law, Arab history before Islam etc. As his knowledge grew, he become famous. Masruq Ibn Al Ajda said of him “whenever I saw Ibn Abbas, I would say : “He is the most handsome of men. When he spoke i would say. He is the most eloquent of men. And when held a conversation I would say, He is most knowledgeable of men”. So when one strive for true knowledge, Allah elevate his status among masses.
LEARNED MAN OF UMMAH
The khalifa umar ibn-al-khattab often sought his advice on important matters of state and branded him as “the young man of maturity”. He was not content to accumulate knowledge. He felt he had a duty to the ummah to educate those who are in search of knowledge.He turned to teaching and his house was a complete university. It was university in full sense with specialize teaching but with one difference that ‘there was only one teacher who was ‘Abdullah Ibn Abbas.’
Conclusion
He had genuine and abiding concern for people. He said ” after realizing the importance of a verse of God’s Book, “I would wish that all people should know what I know.” His service for ummah was incredible. May Alllah accept our deen and choose us among his best people, to convey his message to masses. Ameen ya Rabb !

FAMILY
He was son of wealthy merchant ‘Abbas al Mutlalib’ ( uncle of Prophet saw ). Thus he was called Ibn Abbas ( Meaning son of Abbas ). His mother ( Umm al fadi Lubada ) was second women converted to Islam on some day when Prophets wife khadijah bint Khuwaylid accepted Islam.
EARLY LIFE
He was born in 619 CE.three years before prophet migration to Madeenah. When he reached at age of maturity his mother took him to prophet saw. He attached himself to the service of the Prophet. He used to fetch water for him for making wudu. He was the one who always prefer to stand behind the Prophet whille salah (prayers) and accompany him in his journeys and expeditions. Other name given to him Al-Hibr, ( the doctor) Al Bahr ( the Sea ).He was given the title of Hibr- Ul - Ummah. The Prophet would often draw him as a child close to him, he used to pat him on his shoulder and pray “O Lord, make him acquire a deep understanding of the religion of Islam and instruct him in the meaning and interpretation to things.”
EDUCATION
After the death of Prophet (saw) he continued to collect and learn teaching of Prophet from companions. He become one of the most learned companions of Prophet (saw). He alone memorized about 1666 sayings of Prophet (saw) [Hadith] recorded and authenticated in collection of Al Bukhari and Muslim.
TEACHER OF UMMAH
Ibn Abbas was a teacher, who made his house equivalent to that of a university where he taught. One of his companion described typical scene in front of his house.
“I saw people gathered on the roads leading to his house until there hardly any room in front of his house. I went in and told him about the crowds of people at his door and he asked me to get water for wudu’. He performed wudu and sat down. Then he Said ‘ go out and tell them, Whoever want to ask about the Quran and its interpretation they can enter. I did the same and people entered, until the house was filled then he said to me ‘Go out and say: who wants to ask about Quran and its pronunciation let him enter’. Again the house was filled and Abdullah explain and teach them what was requested.
